Summary

With the popularity of splash pads in our communities increasing, several topics of discussion in relation to fun, design flow, and—most importantly—safety have come into the spotlight. Since we have gathered more knowledge with their popularity in installations, we have a better understanding of how we can bring proper design and application to these relatively newer features. Join us to learn more about the do’s and don’ts of splash pad design.

  • Identify hazards regarding standing water, slips, trips, and falls.
  • Connect exciting design with safe design.
  • Compare early structures with more mindful, newer structures.

Presenter Bio

Paul John Boulifard is a designer and architect with a wide range of professional and academic experiences. He has worked on large-scale projects ranging from skyscrapers, healthcare facilities, and performing arts centers while at Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects in New Haven, CT, to small-scale civic buildings at Cherry Huffman Architects in Raleigh, NC. More recently, he has collaborated with Manuel Zeitlin Architects, Van Pond Architect, William C. Johnson Architect, David Kidd Architect, Root ARCH, and Centric Architecture in Nashville, TN. In conjunction with these professional activities, he has taught at the university level on an adjunct basis at such notable institutions as Wesleyan University and Connecticut College, and locally at Watkins College of Art. He holds a Bachelor of Environmental Design in Architecture from the North Carolina State University College of Design and a Master of Architecture from the Yale University School of Architecture. He also has studied in France and Spain.
