General Session: Wellness in Water and the Impact on Daily Life

Summary

From ancient times to modern life, people have had a primordial draw to water as a healing and therapeutic property. Water is part of our history. It lives in myth and in our stories. Water is essential for our health and wellbeing. In this session, Paul John Boulifard will enlighten you with some theories as to why humans are hard-wired to find peace and serenity around water, and how to embrace the connection we have with nature.

  • Analyze the history of the human relationship with water.
  • Identify ways that we emotionally connect wellness with water.

Presenter Bio

Paul John Boulifard is a designer and architect with a wide range of professional and academic experiences. He has worked on large-scale projects ranging from skyscrapers, healthcare facilities, and performing arts centers while at Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects in New Haven, CT, to small-scale civic buildings at Cherry Huffman Architects in Raleigh, NC. More recently, he has collaborated with Manuel Zeitlin Architects, Van Pond Architect, William C. Johnson Architect, David Kidd Architect, Root ARCH, and Centric Architecture in Nashville, TN. In conjunction with these professional activities, he has taught at the university level on an adjunct basis at such notable institutions as Wesleyan University and Connecticut College, and locally at Watkins College of Art. He holds a Bachelor of Environmental Design in Architecture from the North Carolina State University College of Design and a Master of Architecture from the Yale University School of Architecture. He also has studied in France and Spain.
